Of Sand & Sawdust
Of Sand & Sawdust is a tight-knit team with a shared passion and commitment to quality, creativity, and craftsmanship. We create fine woodworks that reflect the beauty and energy of San Diego. Beyond our love for detail and design, what really sets us apart is our collaborative approach to each project. We view our clients as more than simply homeowners and property managers. They are our neighbors, friends and trusted partners, making each project unique and personal.
Our simple philosophy comes through in every job. While most woodworkers follow what’s always been done, we try to make furniture and cabinetry that has not been seen before, but still retains some familiarity. That familiarity is gained through the use of good proportions, honest construction and old-fashioned usefulness. Our basic concept is to follow the rules and principals of design while using our collective expertise to bend those rules so that every project is personalized to the desires of the client.
We live to make. From cabinetry and closets to bespoke furniture creations and restorations. If you have an idea for project, we’d love to bring it into reality.
About the Maker
Hi I’m Hugo, Carpenter, craftsman and process engineer; specializing in fine wood & metal work.
I’m a maker. Which means I live to bring creative ideas into reality. After working in the industry for several years I decided to start my own project so that I could ensure the highest level of service, quality and professionalism for every client and every project.
I am forever grateful for all those who have been by my side, supporting, encouraging, watching me grow, fall, get back on my feet, I've learned so much from all of you. You keep me humble, you all keep me accountable.
There's no words to describe how I feel, I know I've been blessed with angels on my path. Thank you mom, Martha, for being the source of love, inspiration and strength, for letting us (me and both my brothers) know that there's ways and times, to be patient and to never stop, I love you mother. To the Bauer-Ehrhart family for becoming my second family. To Lorenzo Martoni for always being there, from the distance, for sharing your young spirit with me and for trying to get me on the best path, even when I don't listen sometimes. To my mentor and friend Ron Prater, for sharing your expertise and love for woodworking with me. To Don Miguel and the This Old Shop crew, for teaching me how NOT to do woodworking haha, you're the best! To Michel & Deja for having me when I most needed support on those crazy transition times. To Marcela, to my friends and family for always believing, I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for you. Joe, thanks for always being there. Emi, for summing efforts trying to figure life out on every single project. And obviously to the talented señor Craig Alshin (www.mintymotionstudio.com), for making my words look good and sound beautiful, appreciate you man.To all of you, I keep you deeply in my heart.
